One day in Athens
08:00 Acropolis via south entrance on Dionysiou Areopagitou — timed slot on hhticket.gr (€30, odysseus.culture.gr, checked Aug 2026). 11:00 Acropolis Museum opposite the hill (€20, closed Monday — theacropolismuseum.gr). 13:30 taverna lunch in Plaka (€15–30). 15:30 Ancient Agora below the rock (€10, 5 minutes on foot). 17:30 Monastiraki Πλατεία και λωρίδες υπαίθριας αγοράς. 19:30 δείπνο στο Psiri. Τα βασικά αξιοθέατα βρίσκονται σε απόσταση 20 λεπτών με τα πόδια — δεν απαιτείται μετρό αν μείνετε στο Plaka ή στο Koukaki.
Two days — add depth
Day 1 as above. Day 2 morning: National Archaeological Museum (€12, summer 08:00–20:00 — odysseus.culture.gr) — Metro Line 1 to Victoria or Omonia (€1.20 OASA ticket, 90 minutes, oasa.gr, checked Aug 2026). Afternoon: Panathenaic Stadium (10€, panathenaicstadium.gr) — 10 λεπτά με τα πόδια από το Σύνταγμα. Απόγευμα: Kolonaki καφέ και πρόσβαση με τελεφερίκ του Λυκαβηττού από τη γειτονιά. Αγοράστε ξεχωριστά εισιτήρια Υπουργείου — το συνδυασμένο αρχαιολογικό πάσο έληξε τον Απρίλιο 2025.
Three days — add a day trip
Days 1–2 in the centre as above. Day 3: pick one day trip — Cape Sounion (~90 min KTEL coastal bus, ktelattikis.gr) for a half-day Temple of Poseidon visit, or a Saronic island from Piraeus (~90 min ferry to Hydra — check opensea.gr / operator sites). Reach Piraeus on Metro Line 1 (~25 minutes from Monastiraki). Pre-check last return sailing or bus before leaving town.
The rainy-day plan
Πρωί: National Archaeological Museum (€12) — πλήρως σε εσωτερικούς χώρους. Μεσημεριανό υπό κάλυψη στο Monastiraki. Απόγευμα: Acropolis Museum (20€, γυάλινα δάπεδα πάνω από ανασκαφές) αν το παραλείψατε την πρώτη μέρα. Παραλείψτε τον εκτεθειμένο βράχο Acropolis σε σταθερή βροχή — τα μαρμάρινα σκαλοπάτια γίνονται λείο. Βράδυ: σκεπαστές ταβέρνες στο Psiri. Η γραμμή 2 του μετρό συνδέει τους σταθμούς Σύνταγμα και Acropolis χωρίς περπάτημα στην επιφάνεια (1,20 €, oasa.gr, με έλεγχο Αύγ. 2026).
Slower version with kids
Μόνο ένα θέαμα πριν από το μεσημεριανό γεύμα — Acropolis ή museum, not both. Panathenaic Stadium (€10) lets kids run the track; upper tiers give shade breaks. Skip steep Acropolis summit with toddlers — see Οικογενειακός οδηγός. Koukaki and Plaka flats suit strollers better than Monastiraki steps. Day 3 ferry to Hydra works if seas calm — no cars on the island, flat harbour front.

Is one day enough for Athens?
One day covers the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum and Plaka–Monastiraki on foot — enough for a cruise stop or long layover. You miss the National Archaeological Museum, Panathenaic Stadium and any day trip. Allow two days minimum for the core ticketed sites plus one neighbourhood wander.
What is the best order to see Athens?
Book the Acropolis first slot on hhticket.gr, descend to the Acropolis Museum, then Ancient Agora and Monastiraki before lunch heat. Save the National Archaeological Museum and Panathenaic Stadium for day two. Pair Piraeus ferries with Metro Line 1 on day three — buy OASA tickets before boarding (€1.20, checked Aug 2026).
