The Parthenon crowns the Acropolis hill above Plaka and Monastiraki. Timed-entry tickets are mandatory on hhticket.gr — book ahead for May–October when daily capacity is capped (odysseus.culture.gr, checked Aug 2026). Full admission is €30 (reduced €15); summer hours run 08:00–20:00, winter 08:00–17:00.
The south entrance on Dionysiou Areopagitou is often quieter than the main gate. Allow 2–3 hours on the hill including the Propylaea, Temple of Athena Nike and Erechtheion. Wear grippy shoes — marble is slick. Pair the visit with the Acropolis Museum the same morning while your legs still cooperate.

Museums worth the entry fee
Acropolis Museum at Dionysiou Areopagitou sits on stilts over an excavated neighbourhood — admission €20 (reduced €10), closed Mondays, summer 09:00–20:00 (theacropolismuseum.gr, checked Aug 2026). Ten minutes on foot from the Acropolis south slope; visit right after the hill while context is fresh.
National Archaeological Museum on Patission Avenue holds Greece's largest collection — Mycenaean gold, the Antikythera mechanism and the Artemision bronze. Where to watch the sun go down

For a coastal sunset, Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon is a ~90-minute KTEL coastal bus or car trip via the Athens Riviera (ktelattikis.gr) — full route on Ημερήσιες εκδρομές.

Everything you can see for nothing
Plaka, Monastiraki and the Acropolis south slope at Koukaki cost nothing to wander — neoclassical lanes, flea-market stalls and views up to the hill. OASA lists the centre as walkable (oasa.gr).
Psiri street-art walls and rebetiko bars are free to explore before you sit down for dinner (€15–30 at a taverna, checked Aug 2026). The Athens Riviera at Γλυφάδα is reachable on bus 040 with a €1.20 OASA ticket (oasa.gr, Aug 2026).
