Saronic Islands from Athens
Which part to choose, how to get there, and what a day costs.
Which part of Saronic Islands (Hydra, Aegina, Poros)?
Εδρα — car-free harbour island, stone mansions and donkey paths; about 90 minutes from Piraeus by ferry (operator schedules — check locally). Αίγινα — closest serious island, pistachio farms and the Temple of Aphaia; good if you want maximum time ashore. Πόρος — pine-covered, compact town, pairs well with a relaxed lunch by the clock tower.
Pick one island per day trip — ferry times rarely allow two. Hydra suits walkers; Aegina suits first-timers with limited time; Poros suits families who want a short crossing. All three are Saronic Gulf destinations served from Piraeus (piraeusport.gr).
Getting there without a car
Take metro Γραμμή 1 to Piraeus (€1.20 OASA ticket, 90 minutes on all urban modes, oasa.gr checked Aug 2026) — allow 30 minutes from Syntagma. Foot-passenger ferries and hydrofoils leave from gates inside the port; your ticket shows the pier letter. Buy at the kiosk or online via operators listed on opensea.gr and piraeusport.gr.
No car needed on Hydra — leave vehicles in Athens. Aegina accepts cars on conventional ferries if you book a deck space. Arrive at the port 30 minutes before sailing in July–August; summer timetables multiply but sell out on weekends.
A realistic one-day plan
Aegina sample day: metro to Piraeus by 08:30, morning ferry (crossing time check locally), coffee in the harbour, bus or taxi to Aphaia temple, lunch by the port, afternoon return — confirm last sailing before you hike inland. Hydra: earlier departure, walk the coastal path to Kamini, swim if weather allows, back for early evening metro to central Athens.
Build slack for delayed ferries — do not book a fixed Acropolis slot the same evening unless you have hours of buffer. Pack sun protection; island pharmacies close for siesta.
What a day there costs
Urban transport to Piraeus: €1.20 metro/bus (oasa.gr, checked Aug 2026). Ferry fares vary by operator, vessel type and season — check the posted price at purchase (we do not quote fares that change weekly). Lunch at harbour tavernas typically falls in the 15–30 € dinner band for a midday meal (city.yaml, checked Aug 2026).
Budget roughly a mid-range Athens day (€100–150) plus ferry tickets and any island bus. Cash and cards both work at most kiosks; keep small notes for port taxis. Return before last metro if you want to avoid a Piraeus–centre night taxi.
